Maine Lake Charts - Did You Know

Maine has 2,763 "great ponds" totaling around 1,015,116 acres! The Department of Enviromental Protection defines a "great pond" as any natural water body greater than 10 acres or any "man made" (impounded) water body 30 acres or more.

We have large and small water bodies named both lakes and ponds. There isn't any known difference between the two. The largest pond is Great Pond in Belgrade at 8,239 acres and the largest lake is Moosehead Lake at 74,890 acres. There are 4 lakes that are just 2 acres and smallest named pond is Sunken Heath Pond in Bar Harbor at just 1 acre.

There are: 263 "unnamed" water bodies and the largest is in Norway at 93 acres!

bathymetry data he collected for Unity Pond in 2001, he discovered that Unity Pond has:
