Ice Out 2010!

Here we go.... What a very strange winter it has been here in the northeastern United States. While there has been lots of snow on the eastern seaboard, it has mostly been south of Maine. Here, we have seen very mild conditions and not much snow! The ice on our lakes never really got thick and now in early March the lake conditions look more like early April. For those of us who like to ice fish, the season has been way to short. Ice-Out on Maine lakes are setting records almost daily. To some it can't seem to happen fast enough but be assured, our lakes are rapidly melting away. This webpage has become THE place to get the latest ice-out information. And it only works because of you!

So.... what exactly is ice out? This topic has often been debated. For the purposes of this web page, we will consider "ice out" to be when you can navigate unimpeded from one end of the water body to the other. There may still be ice in coves or along the shoreline but when a person can traverse the entire water body without being stopped by ice flows, we will consider the ice to be out.

It is happening fast!

Please remember to be careful out there. Cold water KILLS. An unplanned dunk in a lake with water temperatures running around 40 degrees can quickly numb your body and make climbing out impossible. Where that PFD!

There are big things happening at Maine Lake Charts. Please stay tuned for exciting new developments!

Friends - First, I would like to thank all of you who have contributed to our ice-out webpage over the years. It has been a lot of fun and very informative for many of our lake users. However, with the recent acquisition of Maine Lake Charts by Fishing Hot Spots (please see our homepage) I am not certain the Ice-Out webpage will continue in 2011. If it does, it may be through some other source so.... when spring arrives in 2011, if you don't find this information here, please do a search to see if it has been reborn somewhere else. Thank you again everyone, for your input, your lake chart purchases, for supporting our local tackle shops and marinas and most of all, for helping to make a hobby into something that has been recognized nationwide. Stay safe and Tight Lines.....
